This list was started May 7th 2006 obviously I have been watching movies for a long time but someone mentioned I should put my reviews on my web site so I started with the last movie I watched and will move on from there. I will try to give these reviews with little or no spoilers so as to not ruin the movie for anyone. So some of these reviews amy be a little lite on content and just deal with what I thought about the movie in general. You will find that mention in these reviews if I would be likely to stop and watch the movie again if I came across it while surfing channels. This is what I consider the most important measure of a movie, it's rewatchability. I mean with 200+ channels on cable the movies you stop and watch again are the ones that are really entertaining. Note: I stopped doing these reviews in september of 2006 and did not start again until August 2007

Cloverfield follows five New Yorkers from the perspective of a hand-held video camera. The movie is exactly the length of a DV Tape and a sub-plot is established by showing bits and pieces of video previously recorded on the tape that is being recorded over. The movie starts as a monster of unknown origin destroys a building. As they go to investigate, parts of the building and the head of the Statue of Liberty come raining down. The movie follows their adventure trying to escape and save a friend, a love interest of the main character. |

This
is a classic Andy Sidaris movie. For those of you who are not familiar
with Andy Sidaris he is a director who made his name with what he called
"Bullets, Bombs and Babes" and let me tell you he delivers
in this movie. There is a lot of gunfire and things exploding making
the first two claims true. This movie stars Julie
Strain (Penthouse
pet of the year 1993) as Willow Black , Julie
K. Smith (Penthouse Pet) as Cobra, Shae
Marks (Playboy Playmate) as Tiger, Raye
Hollitt (Playboy Playmate/Bodybuilder) as Kym, Tammy
Parks (Penthouse Pet) as Scorpion and Carolyn
Liu (Playboy) as Alice so it delivers on the third by the
cup full. Now I have to say right off the bat Andy didn't make
any of his movies to be acting masterpieces, he made them as
corny action flics with a lot of well endowed women showing off
their best points as often as possible. Preferably while running
around with a big gun in their hands. With all that in mind this
is a pretty decent flic and is highly entertaining. Would I stop
for it some night while I was surfing the channels? Of course
not, if it is showing on cable ALL the good points have been taken out! |

This is a classic. It is funny and cynical and full of big stars like Clint
Eastwood, Telly Savalas, Don Rickles, Carol O'Conner, and Donald Sutherland.
This movie is humorous without trivalizing war. It tells a very funny story
in the midst of the absurdity of war. The performances of all the actors
are great, the movie is technically accurate and well directed. If you
have never seen this it is a must watch and it is definitely a movie you
will stop for when surfing the channels. |

This
was a pretty good movie overall. I went into this thinking it would be
another in a long line of meet the family movies. I was presently surprised
when I discovered it wasn't. It did start off that way but quickly veered
off the beaten track and turned into something different. Would I stop
and watch it again if I came across it on cable probably not but I don't
regret watching it. |

Okay
I know this is not a movie but well this is my website and if I want to
include a series boxed set that is my prerogative. This was a great series
when it was on TV and continues to be great on DVD. The boxed set has all
of the episodes that were aired as well as the three that were not. Some
people found the series unusual as it combined high tech gadgets, space
flight and old west settings. Of course any SciFi reader will tell you
this makes perfect sense. Newly opened worlds have no infrastructure
to support much of the equipment we take for granted. Things like cars
and tractors. It takes quite an infrastructure to support production
of fuel. It just makes more sense in the early parts of colonization
to use horses and oxen. They can live off the land and they can reproduce.
Well all that aside the series had a wonderful cast with well developed
characters and well written stories. The existence of this box set and
the success of the movie illustrate that Fox made big mistake canceling
this series. |

A very funny movie. Rafi (Uma
Thurman) is a recently 37 year old who is seeing a psychoanalyst
Lisa (Meryl Streep)
about her issues with the divorce and her relationships in general. She
starts seeing a much younger man David (Bryan
Greenberg) who just happens to be Lisa's son and the fun really starts.
Good story, well acted with good intelligent humor. Well worth seeing. |

This
was a cute movie with good performances by Ashley
Judd, Hugh Jackman, and Marisa
Tomei. The plot was predicable with the ending apparent 20, minutes
in but the humor was good and the story was well acted. You could identify
with the characters and really care about what was happening to them.
All in all it was entertaining and that is the most important measure
of a movie. Would I stop for while surfing channels some night? No probably
not. But it was worth watching the first time. |

This
is a low budget knock off of the Death Wish movies with Karin
Mani as the female protagonist. The cinematography is poor, I guess
the budget was so low they couldn't afford lights. The fights scenes
are poorly done, the dialog is poor and they seem to have something against
poor defenseless swingsets. Kevin
Velligan does an amazing poor job as the criminal master moron of
the movie. On the other hand Karin
Mani is quick to show off her assets as are Britt
Helfer and all of the inmates in the women,s jail. It rates a 17
on the JBB* scale |

This was great feel good movie. John (Richard Gere) is a estate lawyer with a wonderful family and a good life but he feels something is missing. He sees a dance school every night on his way home and one night decides on the spur of the moment to take classes. The characters are great and the story flows right along. Definitely worth watching.

Since it was the 4th of July I figured it was time to watch this movie. I had hesitated to watch this movie as I had heard that the story had been PC'd up so as to not upset the Japanese. Well I am happy to say that it was not the case. The movie was well balanced in this respect. It did not demonize them or make them out to be the not so bad guys. The story is well done with several well done subplots. It points out the mistakes made on both sides and spotlights the heroism of the men and women involved in the attack. It is no Patton or Tora, Tora, Tora but a good movie overall and the combat scenes are good. If I came across it while surfing channels I might stop and watch.

This
was an decent somewhat interesting horror film. The story was not too
bad but really wasn't executed well. At times things move along at a
glacial pace. Now not all horror movies need to be filled with nonstop
action but this movie will at times make you wonder why it needed to
be as long as it it is. It was slow enough I found myself doing little
projects while it was playing just to keep myself busy. Jennifer
Connelly's performance was somewhat stilted but we do get a surprisingly
good performance from Ariel
Gade who played the daughter. The movie is a remake of a Japanese
film of the same name. I don't know what it is but I have not been impressed
with any of the recent remakes japanese horror. This is one of the movies
I would just pass by when surfing the channels. |

Now
this was not the first time I watched this movie, nor is it the fifth
and probably not the tenth. The first time I saw the movie was in the
theater. I picked it up as soon as it came out on DVD. It is the one
and only movie I have ripped to the hard drive on my HTPC.
So I guess you could say I like this movie. I really liked the TV series
that the movie is based on. The series was real SciFi. People complained
about horses and wagons and old west style houses in a SciFi series but
any real SciFi fan will tell you this would be fairly common on newly
settled worlds. The movie carries on from the series and does a great
job of it. The characters have a good depth to them, the story is good
and the acting is great. There is plenty of action and humor as well
as drama. Even if you have never seen the series before you will love
this movie and you will immediately want to go out and rent the series
DVDs. It is one of the best SciFi movies since the original Star Wars
(We won't even mention the drek called episodes 1 - 3). This is definitely
one of the movies you will stop for while surfing channels.

This
is one of the best animated movies I have seen in quite a while. It tells
the story of Little Red Riding Hood but it tells it as a combination
crime drama and adventure movie. Now mix in Fletch and xXx and
you have a great movie. The story is great and the dialog will keep you
laughing. The squirrel and the wolf are particularly funny. This is definitely
a movie I would stop for while surfing channels . |

 |
Well
as straight to video action movies go it was not bad. I do kind of expect
more from Wesley Snipes but
this is a eastern european production like 7 Seconds was and they have
slightly different tastes than we do. I knew from the tagline "The
fate of thousands are in their hands." that budget was not very
big. If it had been it would have been millions and not thousands. It
was an entertaining movie with decent action and stunts and the voice
over gimmick was done pretty well. If you are looking for action without
having to worry too much about a complicated plot this is the movie.
Would I stop and watch it again if I came across it while surfing channels?
Maybe as something to play in the background while I was doing something
else. Like writing these reviews. |

This is a pretty funny movie. Jennifer Aniston plays a woman who learns that her family was the inspiration for the book and film "The Graduate" and she thinks she might just be the result. So she heads off to find out the real story. The movie has many funny scenes and some that are quite touching. Jennifer Aniston gives a pretty good performance as does Kevin Costner but Shirley MacLaine really steals the show. Definitely worth watching but probably not something I would stop and watch again if I came across it surfing channels.

This
is a funny movie. It was made as a spoof of all the jungle adventure
movies out there and a sendup of Apocalypse
Now. It makes fun of feminists, chauvinists, the military and the
government all at the same time. The government convinces Dr. Margo Hunt
(Shannon Tweed) to
venture into the Avocado Jungle and make contact with the Piranha Women
for them. She is accompanied by Bunny (Karen
Mistal) a well endowed assistant with many different outfits and
a chauvinistic male guide Jim (Bill
Maher). Definitely worth seeing. This is one of the movies you will
always stop for when surfing the channels.

This
was a pretty good movie, but not one of Denzel
Washington's best. He plays the chief of police in a small town in
the Florida keys who gets mixed up in a double homicide investigation
where all the evidence seems to point to him. The movie has a decent
storyline and the acting is up to par. There are several interesting
plot twists along, the way but the main character makes some pretty stupid
mistakes along the way. There are some decent performances by Dean
Cain, Sanaa Lathan and Eva
Mendes. It was an entertaining watch, but it is probably not one
of the movies I would stop for if I came across it surfing the channels
some night. |

This
was a very interesting movie. I have always been a fan of Bruce
Willis and have enjoyed most of his movies. This movie was both a
departure from and homage to the movies that made him famous like Die
Hard and Striking
Distance. In this movie he is also police detective,
but in this case he is not some hotshot, he's an over the hill New York
cop with a game leg, nothing to live for, and a drinking problem . So
not your normal Bruce Willis police
character. Mos Def puts
in a good performance as Eddie Bunker the witness he has to escort those "16
Blocks" to the courthouse. The story is well put together and the
action is fairly fast paced. The basic story of this movie may remind
you of The
Gauntlet but the story is significantly different and there have
been many movies to use this premise. Definitely a movie I would stop
on when surfing channels some night. |

This is a classic Film Noir movie shot in 1945 by the legendary Otto Preminger and this is one of his best works. The story revolves around the character Eric Stanton played by Dana Andrews who is kicked off the bus in Walton California because he doesn't have the rest of the fare to San Francisco. He stops in a diner called Pop's Eats and meets Stella played by Linda Darnell and
the fun begins. I am not going to give any more of the plot away here
so you will just have to watch the movie. I promise that you won't be
disappointed. You will be treated to great performances by Alice Faye, Charles Bickford and Anne Revere. The Story is good and the ending will surprise you. Watching this movie makes me want to watch some of Otto Preminger's other famous movies like Anatomy of a Murder and In Harm's Way |

This
movie tries to come across as a serious horror movie so there is little
intended humor. Unfortunately the movie is not that scary, the effects
are pretty cheesy and the acting is bad. They started out with a decent
story premise and went downhill from there. The movie has some decent
names in it including Richard
Hatch who played Apollo in the original Battlestar Galactica and Tim
Thomerson of Trancers
fame but that is not enough to make this movie good. On top of that it
only rates a 2 on the JBB* scale. If I came across this movie while surfing channels I wouldn't even slow down and if it was the only thing I would turn the TV off. |

TThe first of the Massacre Series. The movie was written by Rita Mae Brown as a parody of teen/slasher flicks and it contains quite a bit of humor. Other than that the movie falls into the standard slasher movie category.
The plot revolves around a group girls on the varsity basketball team who are having one last slumber party before the year ends. Of course in these movies a slumber party not only requires plenty of naked women. It also requires psychotic serial killer that can take an amazing amount of damage and with a penchant for power tools. And of course several male characters for cannon fodder. This movies is of course not Academy Award material but it is a pretty good slasher movie. It rates 13 on the JBB* scale and features a performance by scream queen Brinke Stevens
Things we learn in the movie
- Sometimes the van a rockin' is a bad thing.
- Never wear black panties under tight yellow shorts.
- The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution protects a girl's right to privately discuss oral sex with her boyfriend.
- One in four teenage girls have had breast implants.
- Hot dogs are a poor substitute for steak when treating a black eye.
- Knife fighting techniques are taught in the Cub Scouts.
- Pizza retains heat better than a human body.
- Garment bags make perfect hiding places.

This
is the sequel to The Crimson Rivers. Once again we find Commissioner
Pierre Niemans (Jean Reno)
investigating a strange series of killings that have religious overtones.
At the same time Detective Reda (played by Benoît
Magimel in this movie) comes across a man that looks like Jesus who
has been hit by a car. As in the first movie the two investigations are
two different side of the same conspiracy so once again Niemans and Reda
find themselves working together. The original dialog is in French but
the dubbing into English is good. The acting is good and the story moves
along well though at times it is somewhat confusing. All in all it was
a decent film and was worth watching, though if I came across it while
surfing channels some night I don't think I would stop. |

This is an excellent movie.John
Travolta, Samuel L.
Jackson and Connie
Nielsen give great performances. The story is good, it moves along
at a decent clip and keeps you wondering all the time. A group of Army
Rangers are out on a training mission and something goes terribly wrong.
Tom Hardy (John Travolta)
is called in to help investigate. As time moves on the investigation
keeps getting more complex. This movie tries to keep you on the edge
of your seat and does an admirable job. If I was surfing channels and
came across this movie I would definitely stop and watch it again. |

This is a great classic SciFi Movie. The
movie was filmed in 1985 so it might seem a little dated and the effects
are about par for that time. Other than that the story is good the acting
is pretty well done. The premise is that the character Whistler has escaped
the law by going back in time and is now killing off the ancestors of the
rulers in his time. Jack Deth is sent back to stop him. Tim Thomerson puts
in a great performance as Jack Deth a tough as nails policeman from the
future and Helen Hunt does a wonderful job as the co-star in one of her
first films. Well worth watching. The only regret at this time is that
only trancers and trancers 6 are available on DVD at this time.

This was an entertaining movie. The premise
is this a group of sorority pledges have to steal a trophy from the bowling
alley in the mall (Malls in the movies have all kinds of interesting things)
to finish their initiation and become members of the sorority. Well during
the break in they release an imp and the fun really starts. The movie stars
scream queens Brinke Stevens, Michelle Bauer and Linnea Quigley. Linnea's
character steals the show for dialog her part is so good she doesn't need
to reveal her assets. To make up that though the other members of the
trio show them early and often. This gets a 16 on the JBB* scale. |

Well the previews for this movie looked good but what can I say this movie is CRAP. Now those people that know me know that I can be forgiving with a movie if it at least entertains me. I mean I don't need every movie to have an involved plot and deep meaning for me to like it. With this movie the story just jumps along with little or no continuity. It feels like the movie is rushed as if the director did not have time to tell a story and just pieced together some action scenes with some scenes with unexplained angst and through in some nifty visualizations. The only positive things in this movie are a JBB* rating of 14 and the fact that Kristanna Loken gets topless. If I had know that was all there was I would have just gone out on the net and found the clip and saved myself 1.5 hours.

I had been looking forward to watching this movie for quite a while and when I finally did I was not disappointed. Nicolas Cage's performance in this movie was outstanding. It is the story of two con men Nicolas Cage as Roy Waller the neurotic but brilliant leader of the team and Sam Rockwell as Frank Mercer his partner and protege. Theirs lives are thrown into flux by the arrival of Roy's long lost daughter played by Alison Lohman. The movie has a well thought out plot and subplots and has enough surprises to keep you guessing. All in all a great movie.

his was a very funny movie. Both Jim Carrey and Téa Leoni put on great performances and Jim Carey managed to go the entire movie without taking things completely over the top. The Story was premise ia a good one and the ending was great. This movie pokes fun at corporate america and all of the recent scandals there such as Enron and Worldcom. Alec Baldwin puts on a great performance as Jack McCallister the sleazy CEO of the company Jack works for. This is one of the movies you would stop and watch if you came across it on cable some night.

I had been waiting for this movie to come
out for a while now. I really enjoyed the first movie and had hopes that
this movie would be as good. I know sequels are rarely as good or better
than the original movies. Well this movie is the exception. It was as good
and maybe even better than the original. The storyline picks up right after
the end of the first movie and when I say right after I mean just a few
hours after. The storyline is very good and it is consistent
with the first without any of the inconsistencies the often show up in
sequels. The effects in the movie are well done, so well done they are
seamless. You watch this movie without ever saying "Wow, that was a great
effect". This was a very nice thing to see as often times the special effects
and stunts overshadow the story in some of the action movies especially
sequels. It almost always seems like the writers and directors are driven to have bigger
and better effects than the first movie. The performances by Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman continue to be as good as in the first. I would definitely suggest you
watch this movie and if you haven't seen Underworld then I suggest you
watch it first. It will make for a good double feature.

Well I recently re-watched the original
Transporter so I was ready to watch this one. The story was okay, the acting
was good, and the action was good. But the action was a little over the
top. The action and fight scenes in the first movie were the kind that
you can easily suspend your disbelief and say to yourself this could happen.
Not so in the second movie there are time when you catch yourself saying
no F**king way. Other than that the movie was enjoyable and well worth
watching. |

 |
I had been looking forward
to this movie for a long time and finally got to watch it over the memorial
day weekend. I wasn't disappointed. The action and cinematography was
great the special effects were seamless and the plot was good. They did
a decent
job of translation from the animated series to this movie but just because
of the depth of the back story in the series the plot seemed a little
thin. Looking at it as a stand alone feature the plot seems to have sufficient
depth and tells the story well. Charlize Theron puts on a great performance in the lead role and looks good in a cat suit while doing it. |
|
|
 |
|
 |
As action movies go this is a great
one. This movie is also good a just a movie all the fight scenes and
explosions
aside. Jason Statham does a great job as our protagonist Frank, Qi Shu does a credible job as the female lead and François Berléand is great as inspector Tarconi. Add in the explosions
fight scenes and about 10,000 rounds of ammo and you have an outstanding
action movie. |

This movie is a send up of all of the
space sexplotation films of the 80s. Someone is killing off the female
leads of the movie Bad Girls from Mars. The plot to this movie is kind
of lame but it was meant to be The movie is funny just on its face but
it is even funnier if you get all of the inside B-Movie jokes and references.
This movie gets a 33 JBB* as it seems almost every
female start of this show wants to get her points out in the open as
often as
possible. There are performances by some of the great scream queens including Brinke Stevens, Greta Carlson and Edy Williams |

Another entry in the Massacre series
Sorority House Massacre Tells the story of Beth (Angela O'Neill) a girl who does not remember
her
childhood and her brother the psycho in the local mental hospital and
what happens when they meet. The story was predicable and the effects were overdone. But at least
it rated a 12 JBB*. so there were some redeeming qualities
bouncing around. |

Well this movie was entertaining but
predictable. My wife was disappointed as there was no chopping in chopping
mall. The
premise of the movie that a group of college kids decide to have a party
in a furniture store in the mall after hours. Well they pick the night
that the new security bots are put on line. There is lightning strike
and of course the bots turn psychopath and the killing is on. The bots
were
well done the story was predictable and it only rated a 5 JBB*.
But pay attention to the 5th killing (I think) The one that happens right
in front of the furniture store. My wife laughed out loud at that one. |

 |
Okay this was very campy but fairly
entertaining. The plot revolves around 2 concubine slave girls played by Elizabeth Kaitan and Cindy Beal who escape
and crash land
on a planet were the encounter the plot of "The Most Dangerous Game"
but not as intelligently done. This movie rates 13 JBB*.
The plot obviously leaves something to be desired but it was good for laugh
and half naked women with big guns (in both senses of the word) are always
a plus. Also there is a an interesting performance Brinke Stevens
Things I learned from this movie
-
Manacles are polarized.
-
Computers require you wear a rubber glove to access the keypad.
-
Locked doors never get in the way of plot points.
-
Women always wander around castles at night in something sexy.
-
Slave girls are expert spacecraft pilots, can set traps with the
best of them, and know ancient hieroglyphics like the back
of their hand.
-
Mahogany trees are common across the universe.
-
You can duck a laser bolt.

This was a great movie. The plot is
interesting the acting is pretty good and it has plenty of surprises.
Often times in
these horror movies I can immediately make a few predictions such as
who survives. As soon as the movie started I made prediction that one
of
the actresses (I won't say who) will get naked as soon as humanly possible
and that the other will be the one to survive. Well I got one of them
right
the other was a surprise. The story moves along quickly and it builds
and maintains a large amount of tension that will keep you waiting for
the
next scene. This movie rated 6 JBB*. |

This is the remake of the classic George A. Romero film Dawn of the Dead. The writer (James Gunn) and director (Zack Snyder)
took the smart path and wrote a new story that takes place in the same
situation
as the original without trying to use the same characters and subplots
as the original. This gives you a well made movie that pays homage to
the original not some glitzed up retelling of the old story. The plot
moves
quickly the story is intelligent and the effects are great. The cast
is good and the acting is well done. I highly recommend you watch this
movie if you are a fan of the original or even
if you have
never seen it. |

Elf is a very funny heart warming movie with a good premise and a well written story. Will Ferrell does a great job as Buddy the Elf and really makes Buddy innocence seem real and not contrived. There are several other big names in the film including Bob Newhart, James Caan and Edward Asner. This is a movie I would enjoy watching again and if I came across it while surfing channels I would most likely stop to watch for a while. |

The Crimson Rivers (original french
title Les Rivières pourpres )is a French Crime thriller Starring
Jean Reno as Commissioner Pierre Niemans a police detective famous amongst
his peers and Vincent Cassel as Max Kerkerian a young but clever clever
cop. The movie starts with Reno investigating a brutal murder at a remote
college in the French Alps and Cassel investigating the desecration of
a grave about 100 miles away. As the story moves forward it turns out
that the two cases are related and both point to a long hidden crime
and a secret society. The movie is fairly fast paced but a little confusing
at times. You can see that they removed a lot of the background information
that was in the book when they wrote the screenplay which fosters a feeling
that you don't quite know exactly what is going on. The cinematography
in this movie is great taking full advantage of the location and adding
to the intensity of the movie. This films was of course shot in french
but the dubbing is done so well you can almost forget you are watching
a dubbed movie. The overall feeling of this movie reminds me of Seven
even though the story is completely different. All in all this was a
good movie and I would recommend you pick it up if you are in the movie
for a dark crime thriller. |

This was a funny movie but it was very
formulaic. Martin Lawrence is a funny guy and he had good dialog and
some decent gags but you could see the overall storyline coming from
a mile away. Basically he disguises himself as a very large black woman
(Big Momma) and takes her place to keep watch on Sherry (Nia Long) in
hopes that her ex-boyfriend who has escaped jail will come looking for
her. We can almost excuse sherry for falling for the ruse but big momma
friends have to real morons to fall for it. Paul Giamatti and Anthony Anderson put in good performances that are actually better than Martin Lawrence.

This is a totally unabashed chick flick.
This was one of my wife's choices but all in all it was not a bad movie
but it is not one I would watch if I came across it while surfing channels
some evening. That is what I think is the best measure of the quality
of a movie. If you find yourself surfing channels some evening and you
find yourself stopping to re-watch a movie it must be good. This movie
is about 4 lifelong friends who about to spend their first summer apart.
While out shopping the come across a pair of pants that fit each them
perfectly even though they are all of different builds. They think the
pants are magical and make a plan to pass the pants around to each other
over the vacation each keeping them for a week at a time. Now while watching
this movie I started to feel that the message here was that it was fine
for 16 year old girls to sleep with college age guys but I guess that
is just the cynical part of me speaking. |

This was a good movie. The previews of this movie would lead you to believe that it is a comedy and it does have some really funny scenes and dialog but the movie is really a drama. It was something of
a coming of age movie except instead of having a young adult as the protagonist we have
Nicholas Cage's character who though technically an adult has really not grown into adulthood. The performances of Michael Caine, Nicholas Cage and Gemmenne de la Peña are outstanding. Definitely a movie worth watching.

| I am a fan of B-movies and
most of the slasher
movies fall into that category. As slasher
movies go this was not a bad one. The story was what you would expect,
a group of cheerleaders are heading to an away game and break down in
the woods while reports of an escaped serial killer abound. There is
not a lot of gore but this movie would rate a 12 of the Joe
Bob Briggs scale, 18 if you count the deleted scene. This movie is
obviously not a cinematic masterpiece but very few slasher
movies are. It does star some of the all time B-movie Scream Queens Brinke
Stevens Tamie
Sheffield and Nikki
Fritz all of whom remind us why we like these movies. |
