Reading List

This list was started on May 7th, 2006 on a suggestion from a friend. I have read thousands of books over the years and it didn't make sense to try and go over all of them so I decided to start then and move forward. You will notice a gap starting in September of 2006 and extending to August of 2007 and you will notice that my reviews stopped even earlier. Well I have to admit I became a slacker when it came to getting this done. Well I am updating this again but I am now limiting myself to just posting a list of the books I am reading the synopsis and a link to amazon so you can read thier reviews. Also I will be doing some backfilling so some of the books will be missing dates.

Combat vets David Sherman and Dan Cragg know firsthand the courage, sacrifice, and hell of war–and their experiences have made the popular Starfist novels thrill rides of the highest order. Now the explosive action continues on the remote planet Ravenette, where the Marines of the Confederation’s 34th Fleet Initial Strike Team (FIST) find themselves up against a full-fledged rebellion–and a lethally loose cannon of a commanding officer. Desperate to thwart unrelenting aliens and their quest to obliterate humankind, The Confederation has beefed up its defenses. But to the citizens on the outer edges of Human Space around Ravenette–unaware that a deadly enemy even exists–the government’s move seems oppressive, and ten planets have responded with a war of secession. In touch-and-go battles with the seceding planets, the 34th FIST has emerged battered but unbowed, refusing to give up . . . even while under the command of a fanatical general. The enemy determined to strike, a new mission must be carried out, though the troops will likely return in body bags. Should Ensign Charlie Bass and his Marines somehow survive the nightmarishly difficult amphibious landing, they can expect to be outmanned, outgunned, and out-armored in a fierce duel against fresh soldiers. But like any Marine worth his salt, Bass knows there’s only one way to go when facing impossible odds: on the offense with all guns firing. There’s no other choice–because if life was easy, there’d be no need to send in the Marines.

The Galactic Alliance's hard-won success in combating the extragalactic Yuuzhan Vong has proven all too brief – and the tide has turned again to the invader's advantage. The Yuuzhan Vong, having overcome the strategies of the Jedi and their allies, have pushed deeper into the galaxy and conquered more worlds. Coruscant has been remade into the capital of the extragalactic aliens and renamed Yuuzhan'tar. The remaining defenders of the galaxy are struggling to form a united front. Luke, Mara and Jacen are missing in action. Clearly the stage is set for endgame. While Han and Leia receive the horrifying news that hundreds of high-ranking Alliance prisoners face death in a sacrifice to the alien invader's bloodthirsty gods, Luke and his team try to persuade Zonama Sekot to help in the war effort. Yet as they speak, the Alliance capital world Mon Calamari is under attack. At the same time, the Jedi's alliances throughout the galaxy are being tested and the chances of an Alliance victory are being jeopardized by rogue factions determined to deploy the lethal Alpha Red that will exterminate the entire Yuuzhan Vong species. Also among the Yuuzhan Vong, there is a threat of revolt by the oppressed lower classes of their society. Oppressed Shamed Ones and high-ranking officials alike fear that their Supreme Overlord Shimrra's actions will provoke the wrath of their gods. Ultimately, for both opposing forces, too much has been sacrificed and too much is at stake. And now, the final battle between the Yuuzhan Vong and the Galactic Alliance.

Clearly her people have gone terribly astray. For the peace-loving planet harbors not only the key to its own destruction, but the long-forgotten secrets of the Yuuzhan Vong themselves. Meanwhile, General Wedge Antilles, commanding one fleet in a three-pronged campaign to retake the Bilbringi system, is suddenly stranded deep in Yuuzhan Vong space, cut off from all contact. August 28, 2007

Those who steadfastly refuse to surrender—Luke, Han, Leia, and their children and comrades-in-arms—are determined to seize victory against overwhelming odds. But the New Republic is crumbling, divided by internal strife, and intrigue runs rampant: in the heated political race for Chief of State…in the shadows where Yuuzhan Vong spies plot assassinations…and in the inscrutable creature Vergere, a Jedi whose allegiance is impossible to predict. Now, as Luke Skywalker sets about reestablishing the Jedi Council, the growing faction opposed to the ways of the Force unveils a terrifying weapon designed to annihilate the Yuuzhan Vong species. The opposition must be stopped, before dooming the New Republic to becoming the very thing it has sworn to fight against—and unleashing the power of the dark side.

August 28, 2007

Yet whatever happens, whether Jacen's newfound mastery unleashes light or darkness, he will never be the same Jedi again…

August 28, 2007

Continuing the adventures started in Rebel Dream, Wedge Antilles continue to defend the planet Borleias from the Yuuzhan Vong. After rooting out a spy, he begins creating a superlaser, identical to the Death Star's except in one regard: it doesn't work. Using both the laser and Commander Czulkang Lah's obsession with the capture of Jaina Solo, Antilles draws the Yuuzhan Vong fleet away from Lah's flagship. While the fleet is elsewhere, the Super Star Destroyer Lusankya is fitted with a spear and flown directly into the worldship. The worldship is destroyed, and Czulkang Lah perishes. Meanwhile, on Coruscant, Luke Skywalker, Mara Jade Skywalker, Tahiri Veila and Wraith Squadron continue their scouting mission. There, they encounter a Dark Jedi similar to the mythological Lord Nyax. Nyax is more powerful then Luke, but, with the combined efforts of the Jedi and the Yuuzhan Vong, is defeated.

August 28, 2007

When the New Republic leadership refuses to supply additional forces to hold a recaptured Borleias, Wedge Antilles and other Alliance members secretly form the Insiders, a resistance group working outside the New Republic. Also, Jaina Solo's image as Yuuzhan Vong goddess Yun-Harla, the Trickster, gets used for psychological combat. August 28, 2007

August 28, 2007

August 28, 2007

The Yuuzhan Vong are marching through the galaxy and the planet Duro becomes a flashpoint of conflict. Leia is ordered to lead a diplomatic envoy from the New Republic to Duro to seek terms. She clandestinely leads a military force to Duro which stops the Yuuzhan Vong from advancing further into the galaxy, but fails to retake Duro. Amidst the chaos, Jacen Solo is faced with a dilemma. At what point does the use of the Force become an act of aggression? The situation causes Jacen to turn away from the Force, but when the life of a loved one hangs in the balance, Jacen must come to a decision, or risk losing everything. Representatives of the Yuuzhan Vong eventually tap into the galaxywide HoloNet and propose peace terms themselves. They will advance no farther, and instead they will demonstrate on Duro the success of their terraforming, but only if all the Jedi are surrendered to them.

August 28, 2007

Seeking new allies against the threat of the Yuuzhan Vong, Leia is sent by the New Republic to contact the multisystem Hapan Consortium. August 28, 2007

Reeling from the initial incursions of the extragalactic Yuuzhan Vong, the forces of the New Republic regroup to Coruscant, where former Chief of State Leia Organa Solo addresses the Galactic Senate and finds the members divided on how to deal with the Yuuzhan Vong threat. This the second book in the MechWarrior series tells the story of Angela Bekker a star commander in the Ghost Bear clan. This book takes place entirely in Clan Space as Angela is sent to with a green under strength unit to defend a new Ghost Bear Planet.

August 28, 2006

I have always been a big fan of Battletech and have read many books set in this universe. This book is not the best I have read but it is still an entertaining book. It is the story of a young mechwarrior named Sturm Kintaro that is thrust into the leadership of the remnants of the Kore Lancers. The action is good but the pacing is a little faster than it needs to be. All in all a decent book and the start of a new series in the Battletech universe.

August 27, 2006

The empire is falling apart and it is down to open warfare between Sten and the emperor. We get to the 8th and final book in the series and in this book the authors really point out the flaws of a monarchy. This is done mostly in protest of the common use of monarchies in Science Fiction. But all that aside the book moves quickly and goes places that will surprise and amuse you. A great final book in a great series.

August 25, 2006

The emperor is back but something is not quite right. Sten is stuck in the middle of the conflict in the Altic cluster but even from there he can sense something is wrong with the emperor. How wrong he hasn't a clue.

August 23, 2006

The Tahn war is over but the emperor has been asassinated The empire is now being run by the corrupt privy council and they want Sten or at least they want the information in his head. That was their first mistake they should have just left him alone. You live longer that way.

August 21, 2006

After being captured at the end of "Fleet of the Damned" Sten is condemned to a life in a Tahn prison camp. Never one's to give up Sten and Alex plan an escape that gets them back into the war. Another fine addition to the series.

August 18, 2006

After his stint as the commander of the imperial body guards Sten is sent to flight school to be trained as a naval officer. He is then posted to command of a tac ship squadron in the fringe worlds. Just in time for the start of the Tahn wars. Very good action and a well thought out storyline makes this another good addition to the series. This book also points out the flaws in a military dictatorship.

August 14, 2006

After his success in the Wolf Worlds Sten is appointed as the commander of the imperial body guards just in time to be faced with a assassination plot aimed at the emperor. As with the previous books the action and intrigue is good and we meet a few more characters that will continue to show up in the later books.

August 11, 2006

In this book sten has moved up in the world of Mantis operatives and is assigned the job of making peace in the lupus cluster as quickly as possible. He can have any support he needs as long as it is limited to one man. The action is good and several new characters are introduced that will continue to show up in later books in the series. This book also points out the flaws in a fundamentalist religious government.

August 8, 2006

The first book in a very interesting series introduces us to the central character of the series Sten son a migrant worker and a delinq destined to die on Vulcan until a stranger intercedes and gets him off planet. The characters in this book are well developed and the world vulcan demonstrates the worst side of corporate life. A good start on a great series.

August 6, 2006

The third and final book in the Drifter series continues strongly from the foundation set in the first two books. Pik is still with the same crew as the last book and things have gotten even more exciting. This book gives us our first real look at an alien race in Lando's universe. They have been mentioned before, but not in much depth - all that changes with this book.

August 4, 2006

Pik is on the run from bounty hunters after a disastrous run-in with a crooked customs agent. So he takes a job on a space-going tug. This story is a departure from the first with Pik no longer working as a smuggler, but this is not a bad thing. There are several new central characters which give the story more depth than the first book. This book is as well, if not better, written than the first and definitely worth reading.

August 3, 2007

William C. Dietz has written many great books and this is no exception. The book's protagonist is Pik Lando - a smuggler who despite his profession is still a good person. The first book in the series finds Pik flying "The Tinkers Damn" smuggling everything from clone organs to fertilizer. The story is well written, the characters are enjoyable and the pace is good. All in all good book and it promises to be a good series.

August 2, 2006

The third book in the Nightside series takes off in a flash and keeps screaming along. The dialog remains fresh and the plots continue to entertain. We meet some new characters and find out even more about the old ones.

August 1, 2006

This book continues the excellent series started with "Something From the Nightside". The story is more fleshed out than the first and we start to learn even more about the characters. There are some real interesting back stories here. The dialog continues to jump off the page at you and speed you right along. Looking forward to the next book.

July 31, 2006

I have always liked Simon R. Green every since I first read his Deathstalker series. From there I went on to read his Hawk & Fisher books and came to respect him even more. The books in the Nightside series of which this is the first do not disappoint. There is a place called the Nightside it is the "Sick, Secret, Magical Heart of London" a place that attracts all sorts of creatures from all different times and places some of them fictional. Our protagonist, John Taylor, works as a private investigator there. The book is a very fast read with a good plot, plenty of action, and great dialog. Here is an example of this dialog: "This is Suzie Shooter" I said "also know as Suzie Shotgun also know as Jesus it's her, run!" This book is very entertaining and it makes you look forward anxiously for the next.

July 19, 2006

Things have started to move quickly to conclusion in this book and it looks like Mr. Hamilton is not going to leave any loose ends. Should be a good conclusion to a good series.

July 14, 2006

As I predicted the pace in this the second to last book in the series continues strongly. The liberation on Ombley is in full swing. More important information about the possessed is learned and something we learned about in the second book proves to be a possible solution to the crisis.

July 8, 2006

This book manages to close out the Neutronium Alchemist Story thread and at the same time expand some other threads. Most notably the threads surrounding Tranquility, the liberation of Ombley, and the Quinn Dexter thread. We really start to learn more particulars about the possessors and the beyond. All of these subplots start to merge into a few main subplots. The books continue to entertain and still contain many surprises. The pace of the action in this book is increasing and it appears the plot will be moving swiftly in the next two books. This is nice, with many authors the middle books get a little sluggish and when they pick the pace up the final books seem to be rushed. I don't think that will be a problem in this series.

July 4, 2006

The first part of the second novel in the Night's Dawn Trilogy. The conflict continues in this book and the battle lines more well defined as our protagonists begin to understand the truth about their enemies. There continue to be several subplots going on simultaneously but some of them start to merge together as the conflict escalates. This continues to be an entertaining series. The large time gap between when I started the last book and when I started this book does not mean the book is a slow read. The book has a very large plot and several subplots but they read quickly for a book of this type. I just haven't been reading quite as much recently.

June 24, 2006

This book is the second in the Night's Dawn Trilogy by Peter Hamilton but not really. It is the second book only in the paperback version. It is actually the second half of the first hardback book. So for the basic plot outline read the review below . I can say this about the book so far the author has done a great job of building the story and the characters. There are quite a few important characters in the story so far but the author has brought them to life and built your interest in them so that you are truly interested in them.

June 15, 2006

The first book of the Night's Dawn Trilogy by Peter Hamilton. I like to vary the genre of books I am reading periodically and this is a completely different genre. It is a hard Science Fiction space opera. The term space opera has evolved over the decades. Originally it meant "hacky, grinding, stinking, outworn, spaceship yarn" but since then it has come to be (slightly) less pejorative, encompassing any science fiction action story on an interplanetary or interstellar scale. The series is set in the late 26th century and the human race has been divided amongst the Adamists who rely heavily on nanotech and the Edenists who are genetically engineered and have a telepathic affinity with their living ships, living habitats and each other. The two clash on a primitive world called Lalonde and our story moves on from there. So far the book has been entertaining and lives up to it's hard scifi name with well thought out and explained technologies.

The 13th book in the series deals with a trip to Philadelphia to raise a zombie for the Feds to take testimony from or so the synopsis on the back cover says. Micah travels with her and the book is really about them and their interactions. It is hard to call this book a novel or even a novella as it is so short. When I picked up the paperback I noticed it was kind of small (280 pages) but after I opened the first page I knew it was gong to be short. The publishers had used a few common tricks to make the book seem bigger from the outside. The line spacing in the book is double spaced, there is a lot more white space around the margins, they used full pages as the spacing between chapters and still started the first page of the chapter with a half page. On top of this the last 34 pages of the book are an excerpt from the next book in the series making the actual book only 245 pages. Without all these tricks the book would probably be no longer than 100 pages. Well I hope there is something in the story that justifies making a book out of what would normally be a few chapters.

Just started the 12th book in the series. This book is supposed to revolve around a vampiric serial killer. Well it turns out that the serial killer storyline is actually a subplot and the real story is about Anita's relationships and sex. I mean a lot of sex and very graphic sex. This has started to be a bigger theme in the last few books and I agree with many of the reviews out there that it is really starting to detract from the stories.

June 10, 2006

This the eleventh book revolves around an unexpected visit by representatives of Belle Morte a council member and Jean-Claude and Asher's sourde de sang, or "source of blood" as well as a viscous serial killer. The plots continue to be good and the characters continue to grow.

June 9, 2006

The tenth book takes us right back into the center of the Anita's problems with her relationships. It also introduces some important new characters as well a few previously unmentioned lycanthrope types. This is one of the more pivotal books about Anita's personal life so far.

June 7, 2006

The ninth book is the first book in a while that does not directly involve Richard, Jean-Claude or any of the other normal supporting vampires or weres. This book takes place in Santa Fe where a string of grisly preternatural murders have been taking place. Anita gets involved at the request of Edward who lives in Santa Fe under his lea gal identity of Ted Forester. This book gives the reader a greater insight in the character of Edward. He becomes more human to the reader and to Anita.

June 6, 2006

The eighth book revolves around Richard who is in jail on a rape charge. Of course things are not a simple as that. In this book several of the minor characters from previous books are allowed to grow into full fledged characters especially the wereleopard pard as well as Asher and Damion. Anita's power continues to grow and in this book she is forced to grow as a person.

June 4, 2006

The seventh book introduces the vampire council and a firebug (a psychokinetic). The council is upset about some of the actions that have taken place in the previous books and are here to hold Jean-Claude and Anita accountable. At the same time, the firebug is burning down vampire establishments. In this book we also get our first introduction to Asher.

The sixth book in the Anita Blake series finds Anita with a price on her head $500,000 to be exact. The action picks up from there. Edward rolls into town with the info and a promise to help protect her. He was offered the contract but turned it down. He says if he took the contract he would just get to kill Anita but if he acts as her body guard he will get to kill more people. The book continues to involve us in the lycanthrope community, and of course, Jean-Claude is still a very active character. The ending of this book will be a surprise.

June 2, 2006

The fifth book in the Anita Blake series takes place in Branson Missouri. Anita is contracted to call up an entire graveyard of zombies, some of them over 300 years old. Of course everything is not as it seems. At the same time she is down there several murders take place that are of a definite preternatural nature. This is the first book to introduce the Fey and we get some very interesting information about them.

June 2, 2006

This is the fourth book of the Anita Blake Series. This book is more centered around lycanthropes than vampires though. There still seems to be plenty of interaction between Anita and Jean-Claude and the relationship between Anita and Richard appears to be growing. This is the first book to give a real insight into the inner workings of the lycanthrope society.

June 1, 2006

The third book in the Anita Blake series. This book centers around a flock of vampires lead by a rouge master on a killing spree. The subplot involves an organization called Humans First who want to exterminate all of the vampires. Early in the book we are given information about Anita's growing powers. As the book progresses we see more and more powers come out and then we see them go away. This is a very good book and Anita's connections and interactions with many of the other characters changes radically.

May 31, 2006

The second book in the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series. This book revolves around the raising of a several 100 year old zombie and the the aftermath of this raising. We learn some interesting new information about zombie raising and get some startling revaluations about Anita and those around her. The character development continues well in this book and the characters are getting even more interesting.

May 29, 2006

This is the first book in the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series. The story takes place in a world in which vampires are publicly acknowledged and are a part of society. Anita is an animator, she brings the dead back to life at least temporarily. Her second job is as a consultant to the police as a vampire expert. This novel revolves series of murders of innocent vampires. The characters in the book are interesting and they grow and develop as we watch. Anita comes across as slightly bi-polar, brave vampire killer one minute hopeless human the next, but even that seems to work itself by the end of the book. All in all a good read so I will be giving the other books of the series a read.

The 4th book in the Star Risk Series. Chris Bunch continues to deliver an irreverently funny and action packed story. This book revolves around the attempt by Cerebus Security to put Star Risk out of business. This book will keep you laughing and the action makes the story move along quickly. Another quality entry in this series.

May 26, 2006

Well This book finally came in at the library and couldn't wait to read it. The 8th book in the Dresden Files centers around attacks taking place at a horror movie convention. All of our favorite characters are back and true to form they continue to develop. This is one of the things I really like about Jim Butcher, he builds 3 dimensional characters and keeps the characters growing. This along with his good plots and fast flowing stories make for a good read.

May 24, 2006

This is the 3rd book in the Star Risk Series by Chris Bunch. I really like This author. He has a good writing style with good plots, good characters and plenty of humor thrown in. This series revolves around an organization called Star Risk the works as freelance military and security consultants. The characters are very likable and it is fun to see them get into trouble and it is always entertaining to see how they make there way out of that trouble. If you are looking for an entertaining series that has elements of military science fiction blended with sharp humor I would recommend you check these books out.

The third book in the Rachael morgan series. I have just started this book and so far Rachael's life is getting better and worse at the same time. She has temporarily outwitted Big Al but at the same time Nick is pulling away from her. The characters continue to hold my interest and the story continues to be good. Rachael continues to grow and life for her improves but not without cost.

May 20, 2006

This is the second book in the Rachael Morgan series and revolves around the witch hunter killings. Ley line witches are being killed in very gruesome ways and the FIB (Federal Interland Bureau) has come to Rachael for her help in tracking the killer down. This book keeps the same energy and humor of the previous book and continues to grow the characters. We get a lot more insight into the past of both Rachael and Ivy as well as deeper look into their private lives. This series continues to please and I would recommend it anyone who like this genre and to most people who don't.

Dead witch walking is the first book in the Rachel Morgan series. With this series Kim Harrison has created a world that has been completely changed by a tomato the T4 Angel tomato to be exact. In this world the quest for genetically engineered food and medicine resulted in a deadly virus escaping from a lab and attaching itself to the genetic structure of a strain of tomatoes and doing a fairly good job of wiping people out. Interlanders (vampires, witches, weres and other supernatural beings) have lived amongst us since the dawn of time blending in with the rest of humanity. During the angel virus outbreak they show themselves openly. Initially people are scared and want to wipe them all out but after it becomes apparent that the interlanders were the only thing that kept society going during the outbreak and that they helped stop the outbreak an uneasy truce has resulted and the world moves on. In this world Rachael is a Runner, a person who investigates paranormal crimes and runs down the offenders. This book is well written with a good plot and believable characters that you will come to love or hate as the situation requires.

The seventh book of the dresden files (yes read this one previously as well) This books revolves around Marva (A vampire of the black court) blackmailing Harry to find a book for her. Unfortunately there are several major league necromancers also looking for the book and they will do anything to get it. Butters is back and has a much bigger part in this story. Thomas is also featured prominently in this book and we get a much deeper look into the wardens.

May 15, 2006

The 6th book in the dresden files (yes read this one previously as well) This book revolves around a entropy cures targeting the women in a porn movie. Harry is asked to investigate by Thomas a vampire of the white court. Of course things are more complicated than initially presumed. In this book we learn quite a bit of new information about Harry and his past that will surprise you. This is another good book in a good series.

May 14, 2006

This is the 5th book in the dresden files (read this before). After the events of the last book Harry has pretty much got his act back together he is once again living his life. This story revolves around the theft of the Shroud of Turin. It also introduces some new characters. We get to meet the two other Knights of the Cross and we get to meet the Butters the medical examiner who has a small role in this book and a larger one in future books. The books in the series continue to be great.

May 12, 2006

The third book in the Dresden Files. I have also read this book before. This continues Harry's adventures as he races to counteract a sudden rash of vengeful spirits all over chicago. This book marks the introduction of a new character Michael Joseph Patrick a Knight of the Cross and we also get to meet Leanansidhe Harry's fairy godmother and we learn quite a bit more about the NeverNever. This series continues to be a great read and I definitely recommend it to everyone.

The Second Book of the Dresden Files. As with the first book I have read this one before. This book is just as good as the first or possibly even better. This book continues the adventures of Harry Dresden several months after the finish of Storm Front. There have been a series of murders that take place around the time of the full moon Now you only get three guesses about what is doing the killing and the first two don't count. The story get more involved from there with some twists you will never see coming. The character's continue to grow in this book and that is something I really like to see in a series. I really hate long running series that have static characters. As with the first I highly recommend this book.

The first book of the Harry Dresden Series. I have to admit I have read this book before. The Author has a new book out in this series and is often the case with live series I will re-read the prior books when a new one comes out just to refresh my memory. This is one of the best series of books I have read and one I will most likely enjoy reading many times again. The series is about the life and adventures of Harry Dresden the only publicly practicing wizard in chicago and probably the entire United States. The Main characters in this book are very engaging and you find yourself identifying with them from the onset. Harry is your quintessential P. I. with a twist, he uses magic and investigates the paranormal. Like all of your best private investigators he is always scraping by to make a living but is very good at his job, think Phillip Marlowe with some extras. The series takes a very interesting view of a world filled with magic and the supernatural .

May 4, 2006

This is the third volume of the Last of the Renshai series. This series has been filled with a blend of both normal and larger than life characters that works well. The books take a very interesting view on the need for balance between all the forces good/evil and law/chaos. The characters are engaging and the story flows well making for a very enjoyable read. I highly recommend the entire series.
