Teardrop Shear ScraperThis is a shear scraper with an adjustable teardrop scraper bit. It is based on the Roger Sorby multi-tip scraper and in fact uses a replacement tip for that scraper.
This tool is construccted along the lines of the Oland tools I have made. To construct this tool you will need the following.
Mild steel shaft 12 - 15 inches long Hardwood for the handle Copper plumbing coupling for the ferrule Shear Scraper Bit (I picked mine up at Craft Supplies USA) A #21 drill bit and a 10-32 tap 10-32 cap screw and washer The construction of this tool is actually fairly simple. First you will need to cut or grind a flat spot about 1 inch long and 3/16 to 1/4 inch deep on the end of the shaft. The shaft I am using for this tool was not purchased but was salvaged from an old HP laser printer that we scrapped at work. This is a good place to get stainless steel shafts at no cost. Drill and tap a 10-32 hole in the tip about 1/4 inch from tip. On the grinder round over the tip of the tool shaft.
After turning or drilling the handle insert the tool shaft and add the copper ferrule.
Now you can complete the assembly of the scraper
Okay now one of the reasons I make my own tool is cost (Not the most important reason. That reason is pride I get in making my own tools) So lets look at the cost of this tool. Scraper Blade $16 Screw and washer $1 Copper fitting $1 Shaft and handle $0 Total Cost $18 Cost of tool if purchased $80 |
