Hand Planes

Hand Planes

As with many many other woodworkers I have become very interested in hand planes especially the older Stanley/Bailey planes. Like many other I have started looking for these planes used at yard sales and other places and have become interested in restoring the planes for use. Luckily for my budget and my marriage I have not become too obsessed with this as it can become very expensive. I know many people who will spend a lot of time and money searching out hand planes for their collections. Below you will find information from me about the hand plane restoration process and some examples of planes I have rehabbed with before and after pictures. Also here you will find links to sites about stanley planes and sites of other I know who collect and restore these planes.

Wooden and Transition Planes I own

Sandusky Tool Jointing Plane

The Sandusky Tool Company did business between 1869 and 1929. And made hand planes until 1900. This makes this plane between 105 and 136 years old.

Ohio Tool Jack Plane

The Ohio tool company did business from 1823 untill 1920. So this plane was made sometime during those 97 years that makes this plane between 85 and 182 years old

Wooden Moulding Planes

The upper plane is unmarked and I have not yet determined it's pedigree.

The lower plane is a 3/8" bead molding plan and was manufactured by Casey, Kitchel and Company. This company did business from 1847 to 1858. Making this plane 147 to 158 years old. The Plane has the Name J. H. Pierce embossed on it. J. H. Pierce was one of the owners of Pierce & Colman a company based in Dayton Ohio describe as "wholesale and retail dealers in and dressers of all kinds of lumber" they made doors, blinds, and builders' materials he purchased the company in 1876. It is quite possible this plane was used in that company.
